Paul Newman was one of the most famous and iconic individuals of the 20th Century. Born in 1925 Newman was a famed actor, political activist, philanthropist and Motorsports enthusiast.

The love for motorsport was ignited after starring in the 1969 film ‘Winning’ and not long after this, Paul Newman was regularly spotted sporting a Rolex Daytona, a watch which was synonymous with motor racing and even named after the Daytona Speedway in Florida.

First produced in 1962, as with many of the now more collectable vintage Rolex watches, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, particularly with the exotic dial was initially a very slow seller for Rolex, and therefore only produced in small quantities. Retailers were reportedly  happy to sell them with heavy discount. However, it was allegedly not until the King of Cool, Newman had an Italian magazine article written about him, which featured a picture of him sporting his Daytona 6239 with white exotic dial, that the popularity of the watch increased dramatically.

The Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona was born.

Even though throughout his life, Newman actually wore several variations of the Cosmograph, including both steel and white gold versions of the Zenith movement Daytona, it is technically only References: 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263 6264, and 6265, importantly only with the exotic dial that is now known as the ‘Paul Newman’.

The exotic dial featured on the models identified by its contrasted black sub dials against a white background or vice versa. It has an outer track in the same colour as the three sub dials, each of which have hash marks with small square ends.
